One of the major threats that has emerged in recent years in Bhutan is the encroachment of high-altitude rangelands by weeds and invasive species, causing disruptions in ecosystem services and the seasonal use of these pastures by transhumant yak herders. For us at Menjong Sorig Pharmaceutical Corporation Limited, a major concern is the impacts of these invasions on medicinal plants, which are crucial to livelihoods and an essential part of Bhutan’s public health system.

In this blog, Thinley Norbu, Assistant Pharmaceutical Officer, discusses the impacts of these weeds and invasives on medicinal plants.

We are working with ICIMOD and the Department of Forests and Park Services, the Department of Livestock, National Biodiversity Centre, National Land Commission, and National Plant Protection Centre, and yak herders to highlight the threats to Bhutan’s rangelands and to the wealth of medicinal and aromatic plants that are found there.
